Patient Navigation and Coordinated Support for Lung Cancer Patients: Improving Care and Patient Outcomes

The Hellenic Cancer Federation (ELLOK) participated in the development of the new international Consensus Statement “Patient Navigation: Improving Care and Outcomes in Lung Cancer”, which highlights the role of navigation as an important element in strengthening the quality, continuity and equity of care.

Patient Navigation and coordinated support for patients along the care pathway is an organised approach to support that helps patients, their families and caregivers navigate the health system, from diagnosis and treatment through survivorship and follow-up, addressing practical, informational, psychosocial and other barriers that may affect access to and continuity of care.

The Consensus Statement was developed through a multi-stakeholder collaboration involving representatives of the lung cancer patient community, with the support of AstraZeneca.

ELLOK supports Patient Navigation and coordinated support for patients along the care pathway, as it is an approach that responds to a fundamental need of people living with cancer: not to be expected to navigate the complexity of the health system on their own, particularly during a period of great uncertainty.

Both as the Hellenic Cancer Federation (ELLOK) and as the Hellenic Cancer Mission Hub, we are proud to have contributed to this international initiative. It builds on our longstanding work to strengthen coordinated and person-centred cancer care in Greece, including through national policy dialogues on lung cancer and our ongoing collaboration with healthcare professionals, academic partners and stakeholders.

As part of the national dialogue on lung cancer in 2025, in which ELLOK participated also in its capacity as the Hellenic Cancer Mission Hub, the need to strengthen care coordination and develop mechanisms to support patients emerged as an important priority in the Report of Conclusions and Policy Recommendations.

ELLOK continues the national dialogue with healthcare professionals, academics, institutional stakeholders and other patient organisations, with the aim of exploring sustainable models for the implementation of Patient Navigation in Greece.
